Signe Persson-Melin
Jugs (unique) in stoneware
June 28-July 27, 2003
Signe Persson-Melin has been active as an artisan, ceramicist and designer for almost 50 years. Her professional life is so multifaceted that it cannot be summed up in one title. She has run her own workshop and worked in the metal, glass and porcelain industry. In 1985, she became Sweden’s first professor of design, at the Department of Ceramics and Glass at Konstfack.
The “Garden studio” in Skillinge is located in the middle of the fishing village’s old buildings along the so-called Aslaregärdet, a stone’s throw from the village’s small chapel. The green shed in the flamboyant garden has been called “Eastern’s smallest art gallery” by someone, perhaps rightly so since the shed was originally a colonial cottage but today serves as a studio and exhibition space. Signe Persson-Melin has many ties to Österlen and not least to Skillinge, where she is returning this summer. “Signe’s jugs” she calls her exhibition, which she has tailored to the small but spatially generous impression that meets the visitor. Unique jugs, so-called unique, in stoneware, each with its own expression, personal imprint signed Signe Persson-Melin.
The “Garden studio” in Skillinge is adjacent to the artist couple Thérèse Reuterswärd and HC Ericson’s studios and home.
