Signe Persson-Melin, ceramist, designer and artist, passed away on 31 August 2022 at the age of 97.

She was born in Tomelilla, Skåne, in 1925, and was married to graphic designer John Melin.

Persson-Melin studied at the School of Arts, Crafts and Design in Gothenburg and later in Copenhagen.

Her career spanned more than seven decades, with ceramics as her primary discipline but with work extending into glass, metal, and industrial design. She was associated with manufacturers including Höganäs and Rörstrand, and produced work across both art ceramics and applied design for everyday use — a range that reflects her position as one of the most complete designers of the Swedish postwar generation.

Her approach to form was direct and material-driven. Objects in her body of work carry weight and presence without ornament; the material — clay, glass, cast iron — is treated as the primary expressive agent. That stance connects her practice to the broader tradition of Swedish Modernism while remaining distinctly individual.

Persson-Melin collaborated with Byarums Bruk on outdoor objects including the Palissad and Sigill, demonstrating a capacity for work at different scales and in different materials throughout her career. In 2025, Byarums Bruk presented the Fjällsippa planter in her honour, marking what would have been her centenary.

She was recognised as Årets Formbärare by Svensk Form in 2013. The photographs accompanying this notice were taken by ScandinavianDesign.com at her workshop.
