Anki Gneib works between traditions rather than inside one. Trained as an interior architect, she has spent three decades moving between Scandinavian restraint and material experiment — bending veneer, casting Corian, and turning workshop scrap into finished objects.
Training and early practice
Gneib was born in London in 1965 and studied interior architecture and furniture design at Konstfack, the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, graduating with the storage unit Brutus as her degree project for CBI. She worked at the Stockholm firm Wall to Wall Arkitektur och Design, where she designed the entrance to the Museum of East Asian Antiquities, before setting up her own independent studio in Stockholm, working across interiors, exhibition design, and furniture and lighting for clients including IKEA, Nola and Thonet.
Signature objects
Her best-known pieces tend to start from an ordinary material pushed somewhere unexpected. The Jimi lamp, named after Jimi Hendrix, was built from metal shavings she collected outside her own workshop; the Reef floor lamp explored the sea floor in Corian and drew international attention. The Perfo armchair for Frag (2009), a perforated-leather seat on a metal frame, later entered the collection of the Museum of Furniture Studies. In 2015 she designed the Stockholm offices of gaming company King, work later credited with shaping the look of Swedish gaming-industry interiors.
Working with Mia Cullin
In recent years, Gneib has collaborated regularly with fellow designer Mia Cullin — first on the Universe furniture collection, and later on the Mandala table for Karl Andersson & Söner, which grew out of an earlier wall installation the two designers built from folded and bent sheets of paper.
Public space
Gneib also designs for public space: the Viaduct bench for Nola, inspired by the arches of Roman aqueducts, won a Swedish Design Award in 2023 — part of a long-running relationship with the manufacturer that also includes the Rousseau furniture group and the Cacti and Klocka planters.
