Ifö Electric has introduced a new brown porcelain glaze for the Ohm lighting collection, designed by Kauppi & Kauppi.

Launching in 2026 as the collection marks its seventh anniversary, the brown glaze becomes the third standard colour across the entire Ohm range, joining the existing white and black finishes.

The colour has deep roots in the company’s history. During the 1930s, Ifö Electric produced brown-glazed insulators for wooden power line poles across forests and open landscapes — a practical choice that allowed the ceramic components to blend with their natural surroundings.

That relationship with brown glaze continued sporadically through the decades, appearing in sauna luminaires in the 1970s and again in a lighter, high-gloss version in the early 2000s. The new 2026 glaze is described as darker and richer — a contemporary interpretation developed in parallel with renewed architect interest in the finish from several countries.

The Ohm collection was launched in 2019, drawing its formal language from the porcelain insulators produced at the Ifö factory in the early 1900s. The collection has since expanded into a comprehensive lighting family spanning table lamps, pendants, ceiling and wall fixtures, and arm-mounted models for facades and bathrooms. It has received design awards in Sweden and internationally.

Developing the new glaze took close to a year. The process involves selecting a ceramic pigment — in this case iron oxide — and conducting numerous controlled test firings to achieve the right balance of colour, depth and surface lustre. The glaze must also share the same shrinkage rate as the porcelain body to ensure long-term durability against cracking, moisture and UV exposure.

As the only manufacturer of pressed porcelain lighting in Scandinavia, Ifö Electric produces all glazed components at its own facilities.
