The proportions of Note Design Studio’s Alima morph in height and width with five new ways to store, display and organise.

First released as a singular design envisioned to organise collected objects, books or materials needed during creative working processes, this year, Note (design studio) expands the Alima trolley’s aesthetic systematisation across five new products: a scaled-down trolley, a side table and three shelving units.

Shaped by real world experiences, Alima began as a multipurpose trolley and solution to the challenges faced while at work in the studio or at home.

Wanting to expand on this core principle, when designers Kristoffer Fagerström and Malin Engvall, of Note (design studio), began working on the Alima additions, they compiled a list of every need the new variations should cover. This list – which spanned from hiding away messy charging cables at the bedside, to finding the optimum height and length to counterbalance modern televisions, to fitting vinyl records – shaped the new products.

Alima Trolley NDS2
A scaled-down expression of the original, the new trolley preserves its graphic impact while responding to more compact spaces. Keeping the same castors for easy transportation, two layers of solid wood shelving keeps loose papers tidy or offers a hideaway space for laptops. A lower, perforated chrome shelf provides additional space for displaying books, bottles or ambient lighting.

Alima Side Table NDS3
Mirroring the aesthetic of the NDS2 trolley, the side table is an iteration of Alima’s design language. In this product, the second shelf becomes a drawer, allowing essential items to be hidden away, making it perfect as a bedside table, keeping things calm and clear. Swapping castors for chrome feet with rubber caps, this small but thoughtful adaptation prevents the side table from rolling when using the drawer.

Alima Shelves NDS4-NDS6
Optimised to suit a plethora of situations, the variability of the shelving designs provides an Alima for every eventuality. The NDS4 serves as console, a hallway bench or a convenient behind sofa storage. The NSD5 is a mid-size storage piece that performs functionally in any space, but also holds a standard-sized record player and its accompanying media. Reminiscent of Scandinavian midcentury modern shelving systems, the NDS6 is a classic storage unit which creates order among work binders, cooking utensils or, simply displays favourite items.

Each of the new Alima designs are aesthetically anchored to the original trolley by a steel frame with a chrome finish accompanied by a wooden tray, a drawer or shelving. These elements can be chosen in either oak or walnut across the entire Alima range.

Malin Engvall, Note (design studio), comments: “In the new Alima designs, the wooden tray from the trolley gets more of a central focus. This is especially true in the shelving designs – where you can really see that we have transferred a small, raised edge detail around the shelf edges. In these three variations, the lip slightly obscures direct vision and hides any messy details. With these extended wooden elements, I appreciate that the natural grain and patterning is very present.”

The success of the initial release led to a natural growth, taking Alima from a standalone design up to a six-piece family. Following its journey over the years, the trolley and its uses has gone beyond what the studio had imagined, existing equally in hospitality as in residential spaces.

Kristoffer Fagerström, Note (design studio), adds: “We have loved following the Alima trolley’s journey over the past few years – seeing how people have used, styled or placed it. It’s gone far beyond what we could have predicted and it brings us such joy. In a way, these new products feel more permanent in their function, and we’re equally as excited to see how they will fit into people’s lives.”
