Penguin Wooden Lounge Chair

by Ib Kofod-Larsen is design shaped by the modest discipline of mid-century Danish furniture making, where form is resolved through proportion and material rather than unnecessary expression.

Originally conceived by Kofod-Larsen as part of his exploration of sculptural seating, Penguin reflects a clear understanding of how a chair can balance visual lightness with physical support. The result is a lounge chair defined by a continuous relationship between solid oak frame and softly formed seating surfaces, where each element supports the other rather than competing for attention.

The Penguin Wooden Lounge Chair is offered in two interpretations. One features a fully upholstered seat and back, softening the silhouette and creating a more enclosed seating experience; the other maintains a lighter expression, combining a solid oak frame with a formpressed veneer back and upholstered seat. Both versions are available in natural or red-stained oak, allowing the material character to shift between warmth and depth depending on context.

The chair is compact by design, making Penguin particularly suited to smaller residential settings, hospitality interiors and spaces where seating must remain visually restrained without compromising comfort.

About the Designer

Architect Ib Kofod-Larsen (1921-2003) had a successful career in the 1950s and 1960s when Danish design was flourishing across the world, transforming the simple and straightforward into unusually elegant furniture. He had an exceptional understanding of materials and an eye for the potential of the wood and the quality of the raw materials he used. His furniture is sophisticated and well-proportioned with beautiful silhouettes and sculptural, organic lines and curves. Today he is called one of the most underrated – but most exciting – names on the Danish design scene. And one of the greatest design brains Denmark ever had.
