Barber Osgerby’s First Kasthall Collection Lets the Mill Set the Rules
London-based designers Edward Barber and Jay Osgerby make their debut with Swedish textile manufacturer Kasthall at Milan Design Week 2026, presenting two new rugs — Atlas and Bonbon — that mark the start of what the Kinna mill hopes will be a lasting design partnership.
What makes the collaboration notable is the working method. Rather than arriving at Kasthall’s factory with a finished concept, Barber and Osgerby spent time on the mill floor studying how the equipment actually operates — its pace, its limits, its inherent patterns. The resulting rugs were not imposed onto the loom; they emerged from it.
Atlas is the more understated of the two. Its name references the mountain range crossing North Africa, and the rug’s surface carries something of that landscape’s slow, shifting quality. A double-weft construction gives it an unusual depth of texture: the warp thread itself remains visible in the finished surface, contributing to what Barber describes as a kind of shimmer — a quality he notes is relatively rare in industrial rug production.
Bonbon takes a different direction entirely. The weave is denser, the palette more assertive — Berry, Rhubarb, Lemon, Damson — and tone-on-tone layering of yarns creates depth without visual noise. A triple-shuttle looped edge finishes each rug with a tailored precision that works equally well in domestic and contract settings. Osgerby’s design intention here was straightforward: colour that feels physical, immediate, almost appetite-inducing.
Mirkku Kullberg, CEO of Kasthall, describes the collaboration as a return to fundamentals — asking what a rug actually is, and what the mill is genuinely good at. For Kasthall, which has been producing hand-tufted and woven rugs in Kinna since 1889, working with designers who start from the manufacturing process rather than the finished image aligns closely with the company’s own values.
Barber Osgerby, founded in 1996, are known for a body of work that spans furniture, product design and large-scale installation. Their studio in East London has produced work for Vitra, Knoll and the V&A, among many others, and the pair were appointed to the Order of the British Empire in 2013 for services to the design industry. The Kasthall collection marks their first work in woven textiles for a Nordic manufacturer.
