Building on legacy: three new colour variants expand offering of the historic Utzon lamp by Jørn Utzon

Offering three fresh perspectives on Danish architect and designer Jørn Utzon’s work, &Tradition welcomes three new shades, Dark Burgundy, Stone Grey and Grey Beige, to the classic, mid-century Utzon pendant lamp.

Originally conceived by Utzon in 1947, a decade before the architect began work on Sydney Opera House, the Utzon pendant’s structure is a precursor for the lyrical aesthetic of the landmark’s silhouette.

Inspired by time spent as a child in his father’s shipyard, the shade is made of lacquered steel and is comprised of four components formed by a combination of two metal shaping techniques: deep drawing and spinning.

Though relatively simple in their modular form, once each angular component is combined, these refined shapes assemble to produce a lamp with architectural presence. A feature which surpasses aesthetic merit alone, Utzon meticulously constructed this configuration to disperse light with calculated precision.

The new colour variants join three existing finishes: Brass, Steel Blue and White, taking the total family up to six models. While Stone Grey and Grey Beige bring a more soft and subdued offering to the collection, Dark Burgundy is a shade that can be compared to the warmth of the tiles found at Jørn Utzon’s Can Lis home in Mallorca.

In-keeping with the other Utzon variants, the pendant features a high-gloss finish inspired by the ceramic glaze of the chevron-shaped Swedish tiles of Sydney Opera House rooftop. An eye-catching addition, this brings a sleek sheen to the lamp, injecting a sense of movement through dynamic highlights.

Measuring 22cm in diameter and 23cm in height, the Utzon pendants are a compact lighting fixture suitable for both private and professional spaces. The graphic silhouette adds a striking visual element when hung individually above dining tables in homes, and as rows or clusters to fill larger environments. The pendant comes with a fixed 4-metre fabric cord, providing additional length for flexibility and freedom during the installation process.

Jørn Utzon
Born in Copenhagen and raised in Aalborg, Jørn Utzon (1918 – 2008) became fascinated by the design and construction of ships from an early age – a passion which would later inform his practice as an architect and designer. Due to his father’s work as a ship engineer and boat builder, Utzon derived much of his creative inspiration from the waterfront and the large, nautical constructions that populated it. Witnessing the industrial utility of these colossal forms played a pivotal role in forming Utzon’s personal expression and almost every project he took on.
