Vaarnii produces brutally sophisticated furniture exclusively from Finnish Scots Pine. Founded in 2021 by Antti Hirvonen and Miklu Silvanto, the Helsinki-based company collaborates with international designers to revive this underutilized Nordic material.
The brand challenges conventional Scandinavian design preferences. While birch dominated Finnish modernism, pine fell from favor by the 1990s due to its yellow tone and prominent knots. Vaarnii celebrates these characteristics, treating natural imperfections as decorative features rather than flaws.
The collection features designs by Max Lamb, Philippe Malouin, Kwangho Lee, Mac Collins, and Soft Baroque. All pieces use FSC-certified Scots Pine from sustainably managed Finnish forests, manufactured at workshops in Jurva, Lahti, Lohja, and Espoo.
Each piece receives hardwax-oil finish that preserves texture while the wood naturally transforms from pale beige to honey tones over time. Vaarnii’s design philosophy draws from vernacular Finnish furniture traditions, combining local craftsmanship with contemporary international perspectives.
