Welcome to the exhibition Folkform: The Museum of Masonite at Landskrona Art Gallery.
The exhibition runs from October 12 through December 8, 2024.
Folkform: The Museum of Masonite is an exhibition featuring a selection of Folkform’s collected works and furniture designs in Masonite from the past fifteen years. Parts of the exhibition have previously been shown at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Stockholm and at the Lauren Rogers Museum of Art in Mississippi, the city where the material was first invented in 1924.
Since designers Anna Holmquist and Chandra Ahlsell established Folkform in 2005, they have explored Sweden’s industrial heritage and created unique design objects that exist at the intersection of craftsmanship and industry. In addition to studio-produced limited edition pieces, Folkform: The Museum of Masonite presents aspects of Folkform’s design process, rooted in close collaboration with various types of industries.
Folkform has worked with Masonite manufacturing in Rundvik, bronze casting in Limhamn, and leather tanning in Tärnsjö, among others. These projects often begin with in-depth studies of production methods and tools, and in each factory and workshop, Folkform creates objects that both draw inspiration from and challenge traditional manufacturing methods. These processes are photographically documented, and the exhibition also presents the book and dissertation “Production Stories” where the finished products are shown alongside photographs by documentary photographer Magnus Laupa.
Alongside earlier projects such as the Masonite Cabinet with 9 Drawers from 2008 and the Striped Masonite Cabinet from 2013, the exhibition also features entirely new objects designed in Masonite and historical artifacts.
About Folkform
Folkform was founded in 2005 and is run by Chandra Ahlsell and Anna Lovisa Holmquist, both based in Stockholm. They began their collaboration while studying industrial design at Konstfack in Stockholm. Ahlsell also studied at Pratt Institute in New York, and Holmquist at Goldsmiths in London and The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. Folkform’s work is represented in collections including the National Museum in Stockholm and the National Museum in Oslo. In 2019, Folkform received the Bruno Mathsson Prize, the Nordic region’s largest design award, and in 2023, Folkform was named Designer of the Year at the Scandinavian Design Awards.
