A contemporary homage to Venetian craftsmanship, Luca Nichetto’s Gio lamp blends decades of design sensibilities in one showstopping chandelier.

Drawing upon the intricate craftsmanship of Murano glass, Luca Nichetto’s new Gio lamp for &Tradition celebrates the timeless beauty of layered glasswork, reinterpreted through a modern lens.

Luca Nichetto’s deep-rooted connection to Murano, where his grandfather crafted exquisite glass products, is embedded in the design of the new Gio lamp. Each spun aluminium tier unites to form a striking conical shape, a subtle nod to the intricate craft that has defined the glasswork of the Venetian island for centuries.

The Gio lamp also draws inspiration from the legendary Italian designer Gio Ponti, whose innovative approach to the Murano chandelier left an indelible mark on the world of design. Ponti’s vision of simplifying the traditional form by removing excessive decorations and incorporating vibrant colour pairings resonates strongly with Nichetto’s own work. This is reflected in the chandelier’s colour combinations: Signal Green, Deep Blue & Ecru white, and Vermillion Red, Dark Burgundy & Ecru White. The name, Gio, pays tribute to Ponti, honouring the designer’s artistic practice and celebrating his ability to blend tradition with modernity in one cohesive expression.

“The Gio lamp captures the essence of a chandelier’s skeleton, focusing on fundamental geometric shapes,” explains Nichetto. The lamp works as both an up-light—gently emitting from two tiers into its surroundings—and a down light, featuring a hole at the tip of largest cone which directs light onto the surface below. By stripping away the ornate details classically associated with chandeliers, Nichetto has created a minimalist design that still retains a sculptural presence.

Available in two sizes, Gio is suitable for a variety of spaces, both large venues and intimate settings. Whether switched on or off, the lamp’s silhouette serves as an eye-catching centrepiece, by virtue of its carefully considered design which capitalises on the interplay between light and colour.
