Brings Sculptural Thinking to Urban Furniture
Gunilla Hedlund (born 1948 in Malmö) is a Swedish designer whose work centres on public and outdoor furniture.
Her collaboration with Stockholm-based manufacturer Nola Industrier has produced some of the company’s most recognisable pieces — designs in which sculptural form and functional purpose are treated as inseparable.
Hedlund approaches outdoor furniture as a discipline grounded in both material precision and visual coherence. Her pieces are built to read well from multiple angles, to cast interesting shadows, and to hold their character across years of exposure in public environments.
Among her works for Nola is the Moa bench — crafted from a double layer of laser-cut, perforated sheet steel — which creates a surface pattern that is both structural and decorative. The Wave bench in cast aluminium and steel, the Sake modular planter in cast aluminium, the Pastiss bench combining laser-cut steel with wooden slats and polished brass legs, and the lightweight Tuben furniture group further demonstrate her range across materials and contexts.
Works by Hedlund are represented in the collections of the National Museum of Sweden, which holds her Wave bench and the Slapstick table among its design objects.
Her designs are produced in Sweden by Nola Industrier, a company established in 1980 and among the leading manufacturers of urban furniture in Scandinavia.
