Layer Sideboard by Mathieu Gustafsson
We do live in a material world, and we do need proper storage for precious valuables: books, games, kitchenware, linen, and what not.
And we do crave something out of the ordinary: a cabinet in solid wood that doesn’t cry for attention, but that does sport a distinctive unique character.

Mathieu Gustafsson offers a subtle play with geometries. The graphically exact small openings in the front do away with handles: just insert a finger or a hand and let the doors slide open.
’You can always catch a glimpse of what is hidden inside,’ says Mathieu Gustafsson who tries to reinvent familiar furniture typologies for the future, ’the openings will trigger your curiosity to explore what’s inside.’
Revealing and hiding, Layer is never entirely open or completely close. Mathieu Gustafsson has aimed for a minimalistic design where the form is reduced to the essential, with the sliced oak veneer and its horizontal and vertical placement accentuating surfaces and directions. Apart from the sliding veneer-covered doors, the cabinet is all made from massive certified European oak.
’What is in my cabinet at home? I try to reduce the clutter, but I have lots of models and prototypes that I want to keep but are better stowed away. And every time I go back to France, I shop for antique French ceramics and rare advertising objects like a clock in the shape of a Bayonne ham that once sat on top of a butcher’s shelf.’
Layer will add an elegant character to any room while solving the problem of how to store away all things in modern clean pristine surroundings. The well-crafted furniture piece doesn’t need to be placed by a wall; Layer is confident to stand all by itself with its back exposed adding warmth to a home, an office, as well as any public place. Do place Layer directly on the floor or use the optional frame to raise the cabinet to a higher position.
