Swedish designer and artist Mats Theselius presents New Works at Galleri Sebastian Schildt in Stockholm.
The exhibition runs from February 6 to 26, 2017, and is not built around a single theme — instead it serves as an expression of several distinct facets of Theselius’ practice: embroidery, metalwork, patterns, and architecture.
Among the exhibited pieces is the Grapevine armchair — a bespoke piece with a pattern composition by Astrid Theselius depicting grapevines and leaves in black on white felt, executed as appliqué embroidery by Anna-Lena Kippel.
The legs are in black oxidised steel. Also shown is the armchair Koko & Bosse, with a pattern composition by children’s book author and illustrator Lisen Adbåge. The chair uses mixed media — screen printing, appliqué, and embroidery — worked by The Tree of Life Foundation in Chennai, India, on a frame with legs in black oxidised steel. The exhibition also includes Riereta tiles from the Raval series, designed by Theselius for Marrakech Design.
Accompanying the chairs is the Tavolo table from the series The Cherry Thief, produced by Move Möbler, with a Corian tabletop and base in blued steel, in a numbered edition of 1/16.
Galleri Sebastian Schildt is located in the Oxenstierna Manor on Storgatan 35 in Stockholm and is a gallery for contemporary art, craft, and design. Sebastian Schildt is one of Sweden’s foremost gold- and silversmiths.
Mats Theselius (born 1956 in Stockholm) studied interior architecture at Konstfack from 1979 to 1984. His breakthrough came with the Elk Skin armchair for Källemo in 1990, which was produced in a limited edition of 360. His work is represented at Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the State Russian Museum in Moscow, and the Danish Museum of Art and Design. He has received the Torsten & Wanja Söderberg Prize, the Bruno Mathsson Prize (1997), and the King of Sweden’s Prince Eugen Medal (2018).
