Materia has expanded Fredrik Mattson’s Oas modular sofa series

With the addition of a high back option, now available in 1200 mm and 1800 mm heights alongside the existing low back configuration.

Oas is a flexible modular system built around straight and curved seating units.

The high back walls create a defined space within a room while also contributing to sound dampening — making the series particularly well suited to open-plan offices, hotel lobbies, receptions and waiting areas. The straight back unit can be connected with seats on both sides, adding to the configuration possibilities.

The series includes a comprehensive range of accessories: narrow and wide armrests, a writing tablet, power socket integrated into the seat, and connecting tables in multiple variants. An upholstered screen is available for the low back version. The writing tablet arm and recessed box for the wide armrest are available in Colours by Materia (CbM). Wood elements come in FSC-labelled white pigmented or black stained ash.

Sustainability was a central consideration in the development process. Oas uses PurFlex® Biomass Balance moulded polyurethane foam, a material that reduces fossil consumption and cuts the carbon dioxide emissions of each seat unit by approximately 80% compared to conventional foam. The 1-seater and 90° connecting table can be fitted with castors for easy repositioning.

Fredrik Mattson trained as a furniture designer and interior architect, graduating from Konstfack in Stockholm in 2002 after several years of cabinet-making study. His design approach emphasises directness — keeping the original sketch intact through the production process and resisting the pull of shortcuts or technological compromise.
