Mats Broberg and Johan Ridderström design furniture the way architects think about buildings — as objects that have to hold their own in a room, not just look good in a photograph.
Meeting at Konstfack
The two met while studying interior architecture at Konstfack, the University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm, graduating in 2006 and founding their joint studio the same year. They describe their working relationship as a balance of temperaments: Broberg brings the first, often odd idea, and Ridderström works out how to build it. Their pieces typically start from what they call a “first-hand vision” — an ordinary, everyday observation reshaped into something that reads as both familiar and slightly off.
Current work
Their best-known piece, the TATI series of tables, mirrors and coat racks for Asplund, won Sköna Hem’s Furniture of the Year in 2012 and continues to expand today. More recently they have designed the Serpentine easy chair for Swedese, built around a single S-curved line, and the Apollo lighting series for Pholc, machine-turned from solid aluminium.
Public space and the wider range
Beyond furniture for the home, the duo designs the Parco series of outdoor furniture for Nola, used in public spaces internationally, and the Leaf lamp series and Plugged pendant for Muuto. The range reflects the architectural training behind the studio: a chair, a park bench and a pendant lamp are all, to Broberg and Ridderström, problems of how an object sits inside a larger space.
Awards and recognition
The studio’s work has received a Wallpaper Design Award, the Elle Interior Design Prize, a Good Design Award, and Residence Magazine’s Designer of the Year. Alongside Asplund, they design regularly for Pholc, Swedese, Nola and Muuto. More of the studio’s work is on view at brda.se.
