Chris Martin (b. 1970) is a British-Swedish furniture designer and co-founder of Massproductions. Raised in Hertfordshire, England, he studied at the Royal College of Art in London and began his career as an assistant to Jasper Morrison. Collaborations with Thomas Eriksson and Thomas Sandell brought him to Sweden in 1995, where he designed furniture for a range of clients before meeting Swedish designer Magnus Elebäck.
The two began working together in 1999 and founded Massproductions in 2009, taking on design, manufacturing, distribution and marketing under one roof. Their breakthrough was the wire chair Tio, later extended with a hot-dip-galvanized finish. Martin’s work for the company since has included the Astro club chair, the Spark armchair, the Patch sofa system, the BAM! sofa and the Icha stool, alongside smaller pieces such as the Silent Bench and Memory Mirror. His Woodwerk collection was named Furniture of the Year.
In 2020, Martin — a Swedish citizen since 2016 — was awarded the Bruno Mathsson Prize, the largest design award in the Nordic region. The jury described his work as uniting “spectacular, brilliant” design with “intentionally sustainable, good functional design,” noting how he “elevates archetypical elements to artistic heights, with humor and playfulness.” Martin called Bruno Mathsson’s legacy of controlling his own production an inspiration for the path he and Elebäck had taken with Massproductions.
Martin continues to design for Massproductions from Stockholm.
