David Regestam is a Swedish architect, interior architect and furniture designer, born in 1980. He combines interior work at Wingårdhs in Stockholm with furniture design, above all for Gärsnäs, where his chairs and tables are rooted in the company’s long tradition of fine woodworking.
Background
Regestam studied design at HDK, the School of Design and Crafts at the University of Gothenburg, and interior architecture and furniture design at Konstfack in Stockholm, graduating in 2007. He has since worked across architecture, interiors and furniture, periodically in Japan together with the Japanese designer Junichi Tokuda. As an interior architect at Wingårdhs he led the interiors of the restaurant Tak in central Stockholm, which Wallpaper named Best New Restaurant, combining a new table series with Jasper Morrison‘s Lightwood chair.
Design approach
Regestam’s work moves between the scale of the room and the single piece of furniture. His designs for Gärsnäs tend to come as flexible families, such as tables in several shapes and heights, that can be adapted to both public and domestic interiors, while his early work with Tokuda reflects an interest in compact, multifunctional objects.
Designs for Gärsnäs
The Kolonn pillar table of 2015 rests on a central column and can be extended by adding further columns. The Tak table series followed in 2017, available round, square or rectangular in many sizes and heights. The Viva chair, previewed in Milan in 2019 and launched in 2020, puts comfort first and has a body of felt made from recycled textiles. Regestam also designed the Gärsnäs stand at the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2017, inspired by the landscape of Österlen.
Designs for Karl Andersson & Söner
Together with Junichi Tokuda he designed the Steelo stool for Karl Andersson & Söner in 2012 and the Collage wall organiser, which combines mirror, writing board, hooks and shelf in one piece.
