Jasper Morrison — Designer for Fredericia & Nikari

Jasper Morrison is a British designer, born in London in 1959, whose work is defined by restraint — objects designed to be so ordinary they disappear into daily use. He studied at Kingston Polytechnic, the Royal College of Art and Berlin’s Hochschule der Künste, before opening his own practice, Office for Design, in London in 1986. In 2006, he co-curated the exhibition Super Normal with Japanese designer Naoto Fukasawa, a project that named and defined the design philosophy most associated with his work.

Among his Scandinavian collaborations, Morrison has worked extensively with Danish manufacturer Fredericia, redesigning its Jota Lounge collection — detailed in a rework of a Danish classic that softened the original’s lines — and with HAY, for whom he designed the Pack Chair. For Finnish manufacturer Nikari, he has designed the Archetyp Lobby and Lounge chairs, and, together with Wataru Kumano, the December chair.

His work with Swedish manufacturers includes the Holocene No. 3 lamp for Wästberg and the Kali chair and table for Offecct. Beyond Scandinavia, Morrison has designed for manufacturers across Europe and Japan over a four-decade career, and his honours include the Compasso d’Oro Career Award and a CBE for services to design.
