Lena Bergström — Designer, Orrefors

Lena Bergström is a Swedish designer working across glass and textiles, born in Umeå in 1961. She studied textile design at Konstfack in Stockholm, graduating in 1989, and spent the following years training in England, Belgium, Finland and Japan before founding her own studio, Lena Bergström Design, the same year. Her early textile work for Ljungbergs brought her an Excellent Swedish Design award in 1992.

In 1994, Bergström began what became a three-decade collaboration with Orrefors, despite having no previous experience in glass. “To enter the world of glass was wonderful,” she has said. “I fell in love with the essence of the material, the incredible craft and all the knowledge found at Orrefors glassworks.” Her Puck candleholders became the studio’s first high-volume production, followed by the Squeeze vase series and, from 2009, the cut-crystal Carat collection — later extended with new pieces and now one of the company’s bestselling lines.

Beyond glass, Bergström has designed textiles and rugs for Design House Stockholm, including the Björk stool, the Basket rug and the Level rug, and has served as creative adviser to Swedish linen weaver Klässbols since 2011. Her work is held in the collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm and the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg, and she has received the Elle Interiör Design Award and the Formidable Design Prize, among others.

Bergström continues to design for Orrefors and her own studio.
