Mia Lagerman — Swedish-Danish Furniture Designer

Mia Lagerman is a Swedish-Danish furniture designer who has worked across the Scandinavian design scene for more than 25 years. Born, raised and educated in both Stockholm and Copenhagen, she has lived in Copenhagen since 1993. She describes herself as “an incarnate Scandinavian who believes in quality, functionality and aesthetics,” and treats design as a process — from concept through production to final result — built on dialogue with manufacturers and always with the end-user in mind.

Her work spans a wide range of Scandinavian manufacturers, including the Mira Lounge for Skagerak, the Comma tray for Swedese, and the Taylor armchair and Hippo & Potamus for Blå Station. She has also designed the Daisy Planter for Nola, the Metro chair for Kristensen Chairs, and the Sky Wood collection and Sky Chair — winner of a German Design Award — for Icons of Denmark.

More recently, Lagerman designed THE GLASS for Them Objects, named Design of the Year, and the sculptural Marcel and Omlott lamps for By Rydéns. She says good design is “when everything comes together” — something that should be understood without “endless long explanations, pictures and texts.” For Lagerman, “aesthetics is very personal and something that grows all the time,” and she resists the pull toward design that becomes, in her words, “nice, proper and predictable.”

Lagerman continues to design from her studio in Copenhagen.
