Nirvan Richter was born Erik Johansson in 1954, the son of an engineer raised on a small farm and a home economics teacher — a background he credits with his environmental instincts. He studied architecture at KTH in Stockholm, then trained as a furniture carpenter through Komvux and Carl Malmsten‘s furniture school. In 1988 he curated an exhibition on Carl Malmsten at Nordiska museet, an early sign of where his own practice was heading.
Founding Norrgavel
In 1991, working from a cottage in Lund, Richter began developing the furniture that would become Norrgavel: solid wood pieces built to be repaired, reupholstered and passed down rather than replaced. The company’s public debut came at the Bo93 furniture fair in Karlskrona in 1993, and the first store opened in Stockholm in 1994. In 1998, Norrgavel became the first Swedish home furniture maker to carry the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, followed a year later by the Swedish furniture industry’s own environmental prize, awarded with WWF.
Design philosophy
Richter’s furniture draws on functionalism, Shaker design and Japanese wabi-sabi as much as on Carl Malmsten and Carl Larsson’s ideas of a humane Swedish home. He works almost exclusively with natural materials — oak, linen, wool — arguing that they age well and can be kept in circulation for generations rather than manufactured for rapid turnover. “Ecology, environment and sustainability are our DNA,” he has said. “It always has been and always will be.” He has also designed the Nude collection for the Vinslöv furniture maker Skandiform.
Recognition and today
Norrgavel’s furniture has won several design awards citing its environmental credentials, and Residence Magazine named Richter its Environmental Profile of the Year in 2019. He remains Norrgavel’s designer and concept director, chairing the board alongside his children Sofie and David, who took over as co-CEOs in 2021.
