OEO Studio is a Copenhagen design practice founded in 2003 by Thomas Lykke and Anne-Marie Buemann. The studio works across architecture, interiors, products and brands. With a studio in Copenhagen and a project office in Tokyo, it combines Danish design heritage with a Japanese sense of material, craft and restraint.
Background
Thomas Lykke, Head of Design, was born in 1971 and trained as a fashion designer in Copenhagen and San Francisco. From 2000 to 2003 he was interiors editor at Wallpaper* magazine, and he founded OEO Studio the same year he left. Anne-Marie Buemann is the studio’s managing partner.
Design approach
OEO Studio starts from materials and the people who work them. Natural materials with warmth recur, often used in unexpected ways. Japanese joinery is another recurring reference, especially miyadaiku temple carpentry, where wooden parts lock together without screws or glue. Many projects are made with Japanese craftsmen and producers, and in 2026 the studio curated Japanmade, an exhibition of Japanese brands, at 3daysofdesign.
Interiors
The studio led the interior renovation of Designmuseum Danmark, which reopened in 2022. For the museum it designed the Celine pendant, now produced by Le Klint, and brought Hans Bølling‘s Tray Table into the café, library and lounge in the museum’s signature blue. OEO Studio has also designed the spaces for Noma Kyoto at Ace Hotel Kyoto, first in 2023 and again in autumn 2024, with furniture by Time & Style.
Products
For Brdr. Krüger, a long-term partner, the studio designed the Jari low tables in solid wood. For &Tradition it created Ita, a table and bench collection built on miyadaiku joints. For GUBI it designed the Carmel tables with glazed stoneware tops. For Mater it made the Terra lighting collection in a material made from e-waste and coffee shells.
Recent work includes the cast Nagare stool for Time & Style, made in Toyama by artisans who cast temple bells. There are also the Koshi-do cabinet fronts for Garde Hvalsøe. Other clients include Georg Jensen, Dinesen, Fredericia, Stellar Works and Kadeau.
