Background
Shane Schneck was born in Chicago, Illinois, and studied architecture across programmes in Miami, Oxford, and Ohio. His design career began in Milan in 1999, when he joined Piero Lissoni’s studio as a senior industrial designer — a decade of work that shaped his approach before he moved north to Scandinavia.
Studio OfD in Stockholm
In 2010 Schneck founded Studio OfD (Office for Design) in Stockholm, leading a small team that has gone on to work with manufacturers including HAY, Kartell, Fritz Hansen, and Muuto.
Design philosophy
Schneck describes his aim as “realising stylish everyday objects that make you happy every day” — simple, accessible products grounded in Scandinavian design traditions but built to challenge industry standards, often through an unexpected use of colour, form, or material.
Bernard and other work for HAY
Among his best-known pieces for HAY is the Bernard easy chair, alongside the compact Bowler side table and the Tamoto bed. His furniture has also included the Ru chair, and outside HAY he has designed the Easel chair for the Luxembourg brand Dante — Goods and Bads.
Bruno Mathsson Prize
In 2016 Schneck received the Bruno Mathsson Prize together with Clara von Zweigbergk, adding to a list of accolades that also includes an iF Award, a Red Dot Award, and a Dezeen Award.
