Christine Schwarzer’s Polstergeist Sofa System for Blå Station Celebrates 25 Years
Christine Schwarzer’s Polstergeist sofa system for Blå Station celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2025, marking a quarter-century of modular seating innovation. Designed in 2000, this versatile furniture system continues to serve contract interiors worldwide with its distinctive combination of functional flexibility and graphic clarity.
The Polstergeist system offers multiple configurations, accommodating none, one, or two backrests. The backrests can be positioned face-to-face in a tête-à-tête arrangement, creating intimate conversation zones within larger spaces. Side panels and edges accept contrasting colors, enabling visual customization that responds to specific interior requirements. This adaptability has made Polstergeist a preferred choice for fairgrounds, educational institutions, and waiting areas where seating needs vary.
The construction combines a steel and wood frame with molded polyurethane foam upholstery, covered in fabric or leather. Chrome-plated steel runners provide visual lightness while ensuring structural integrity. Extended foot options prevent the sofa from touching walls, addressing practical installation considerations in diverse settings.
Christine Schwarzer, born in Copenhagen in 1970, developed Polstergeist during the early years of her design practice. Educated at Danmarks Designskole in Copenhagen and the University of Art and Design in Helsinki, Schwarzer brought a distinctly Nordic sensibility to contract furniture design. Her childhood experiences creating handmade objects with needle, thread, hammer, and nails informed her approach to furniture making, where creative satisfaction derives from the complete design process.

Schwarzer’s design philosophy emphasizes simplicity and clarity, expressed through graphic forms without decorative excess. Her work channels creative passion into different forms of expressionism, often developing ideas from collected fragments she has worked and reworked. Fascinated by modern art, she studies colors, shapes, patterns, and graphics, sometimes finding catalysts for creative ideas in music. Her stated objective remains consistent: making the world a happier, more playful, and beautiful place through design.
The Polstergeist system exemplifies this philosophy through its straightforward functionality and visual presence. The modular approach respects the practical demands of contract environments while maintaining design integrity. After 25 years in production, the system demonstrates how thoughtful design solutions can achieve longevity without requiring constant revision.
Blå Station’s continued production of Polstergeist reflects the Swedish manufacturer’s commitment to designs that balance innovation with enduring relevance. The system’s quarter-century milestone coincides with renewed interest in modular furniture systems that adapt to evolving workplace and public space requirements. As organizations reconsider how people gather, wait, and collaborate, Polstergeist’s configurable nature addresses contemporary needs while honoring its 2000 origins.
The 25th anniversary invites reflection on how contract furniture design has evolved since 2000, and how certain solutions remain relevant across changing design movements. Polstergeist’s chromium runners, clean lines, and modular logic speak to both turn-of-millennium optimism and current preferences for flexible, adaptable interiors. Christine Schwarzer’s design continues to serve spaces where people pause, meet, and transition, proving that well-considered furniture systems can transcend temporal trends while maintaining their original purpose and character.
