Signe Persson-Melin 2005 @ ScandinavianDesign Gallery

SPM omslag

Ceramicist and designer Signe Persson-Melin has her studio wall-to-wall with the ScandinavianDesign.com gallery.

It was therefore natural for us to create an exhibition presenting a selection of her objects — past and present.

Over five decades, Signe Persson-Melin has worked as a craft artist, ceramicist and designer. Her professional life is too multifaceted to be captured in a single title. She has run her own studio and worked within the metal, glass and porcelain industries. In 1985 she became Sweden’s first professor of design, at the Department of Ceramics and Glass at Konstfack.

Without compromising on quality or artistic integrity, Signe Persson-Melin creates objects that respond to the needs of the time. She has a natural sensitivity to her surroundings while preserving a recognisable core — a personal approach. Her relationship to materials and techniques is close and instinctive. Whether working with industrial or craft-based methods, the material becomes sensuous. Glazes are mixed with absolute ear. Through her feeling for the irregular and the varied, something is achieved that a perfectionist temperament could never produce. The subtle richness of the clays, the deliberate and almost imperceptible irregularity of form, the stamped surfaces and the combination of exposed and glazed textures give the objects their life.
