Siro with Armrests
Design Ilkka Suppanen & Raffaella Mangiarotti
Ilkka Suppanen and Raffaella Mangiarotti have extended the Siro chair family for Woodnotes with an armrest variant — Siro with Armrests, introduced in 2016.
The original Siro chair was introduced by Woodnotes in 2014 as a multipurpose seat in oak, suitable for dining, side, and conference use. The 2016 armrest version adds a slender horizontal support formed from bent metal and wrapped in leather, curving around the chair’s profile to create what the designers describe as a beautiful and slender silhouette. The addition of the armrest shifts the chair’s character slightly — from a pure utility seat toward something that occupies a more considered position in a room, while retaining the versatility that makes Siro usable across contexts.
Suppanen and Mangiarotti have developed a sustained body of work for Woodnotes that includes the Siro chair, Siro bar stool, Siro with Armrests, the Twiggy side table, and the Arenzano folding chair. The collaboration is characterised by a shared interest in precise, lightweight forms that integrate Woodnotes’ paper yarn textile material language with furniture construction in wood and metal.
Ilkka Suppanen is a Finnish designer and interior architect based in Helsinki, recipient of the Torsten and Wanja Söderberg Prize in 2015 and the Kaj Franck Design Prize in 2020. Raffaella Mangiarotti is an Italian designer based in Helsinki with a long collaborative relationship with Suppanen across multiple projects and manufacturers.
Woodnotes is a Finnish design company founded in 1987, known internationally for its paper yarn textiles and furniture collection.
