Swedish designer and architect Thomas Sandell has created Torp, a new candleholder for Skultuna — the Swedish brass manufacturer with roots dating back to 1607.
Torp is a small, elegant candleholder intended for intimate table settings, designed with restaurants and smaller spaces in mind.
The piece is cast in polished brass, a material that Skultuna has worked with across centuries and that defines much of the brand’s contemporary collection.
The design is rooted in a personal memory. “I remember a small cottage from long ago, without electricity or water, where a small beautiful candleholder stood on the bedside table,” says Sandell. The product name Torp — the Swedish word for a small rural cottage — reflects that origin directly.
The collaboration between Sandell and Skultuna has produced several pieces over the years, including the Teater candlestick, originally designed for the Stockholm restaurant Teatergrillen. Torp continues this ongoing partnership between the designer and the historic Swedish manufacturer.
Thomas Sandell was born in 1959 in Jakobstad, Finland, and is based in Sweden. He is the co-founder of the Stockholm studio Sandellsandberg and has worked with manufacturers including Artek, Asplund, Källemo, Gärsnäs and IKEA. His designs have received the Utmärkt Svensk Form award on multiple occasions.
