Background
Space Copenhagen was founded in 2005 by Signe Bindslev Henriksen and Peter Bundgaard Rützou. From the outset the studio has worked across disciplines — interior design, art direction and installation, furniture and lighting — rather than treating them as separate specialisms, taking on projects for private homes, restaurants and hotels around the world.
Poetic Modernism
The studio describes its own approach as “Poetic Modernism” — an attempt to reconcile opposites: the classical with the contemporary, the industrial with the organic, the sculptural with the minimal. Central to the philosophy is what the studio calls a slow aesthetic, one that favours quality and longevity over trend, shaped by the context of a place, its function, and an understanding of how people actually use a space.
Interiors
Space Copenhagen’s interior work includes some of the most recognised restaurant spaces in the world: Noma in Copenhagen, repeatedly ranked among the World’s 50 Best Restaurants, and Geranium, run by Bocuse d’Or-winning chef Rasmus Kofoed. Its hotel projects include 11 Howard in New York and The Stratford in London.
Furniture and product design
The studio is one of the most prolific product designers in contemporary Danish furniture, with a long-running relationship with &Tradition that spans the Rotate trolley, the Bella chandelier, the Solid collection and the Thorvald outdoor range. For Gubi it has designed the Howard seating collection and the marble Gravity collection, and for Fredericia the Sequoia pouf and Fellow lamp. Its work for Mater includes the Eternity chair and the High Stool collection.
