Exhibitions and recognition

John Kandell (1925–1991) built his reputation through exhibitions at the National Museum in Stockholm and the Norrköping Museum of Art, alongside shows in Japan, the United States, Berlin, and Paris. In 1989 he received Dagens Nyheter’s Designer’s Award along with a Swedish state artist’s bursary, recognition that came in the same decade as some of his most ambitious work.

Architecture collaborations

Much of Kandell’s early chair design grew out of collaborations with architects, including Peter Celsing, Nils Tesch, and Sven Ivar Lind, for whose buildings he designed seating integrated into the architecture rather than added to it afterward. Critics have described the results as marked by “refined proportions, vigorous line and exquisite handling of materials” — a description that stayed accurate across his career.

Sculpture, painting, and furniture in the 1980s

Kandell’s work took a new direction in the 1980s, blending sculpture, painting, architecture, and furniture into pieces with a playful, often humorous character. Picasso’s influence has been noted in this period, most visibly in the sculptural forms he brought to furniture that was still, at its core, built to be used. Pieces from this period, including the Camilla chair, the Solitär armchair, and the Victory chair, were the focus of a 2005 exhibition at ScandinavianDesign Gallery in Malmö.

The Pilaster shelf for Källemo

The clearest expression of that late style is the Pilaster shelf, designed in 1989 for Källemo. Its sculptural, column-like form treats a piece of storage furniture as an object in its own right, and it remains one of Kandell’s most recognised designs — still in production more than three decades later, alongside other pieces such as the Gårdshult garden chair.

Legacy

Kandell died in 1991, but Källemo has kept his designs in production ever since, and his work has continued to appear in exhibitions at the National Museum and ArkDes. His life and career, together with his wife Ulla Kandell, are documented in Gunilla Lundahl’s book Leken och allvaret: John och Ulla Kandell (“Play and Seriousness: John and Ulla Kandell”). November 2025 marked what would have been his 100th birthday — read more in the centenary feature marking the occasion.
