A Love Letter Written in Furniture:
The Launch of a Remarkable Bedroom Interior in Paris
During Paris Design Week, House of Finn Juhl presents a special relaunch: A bedroom interior which Finn Juhl dedicated to his partner, Hanne Wilhelm Hansen. The colorful furniture series, comprising a bed, a lounge chair, a small table, and a glove cabinet, was originally launched in 1961 and is one of the most personal and unconventional projects of Finn Juhl’s career.
The relaunch of the bedroom interior will be exhibited at the gallery Triode Design in Paris. The exhibition opens on September 10 and will be on view through October 24, 2026.

Finn Juhl’s interior stood out distinctly in its time. The bedroom was an extravagant, graphic universe, where colors, steel, and new combinations of materials reflected Finn Juhl’s creative curiosity and his love for Hanne Wilhelm Hansen.

The bed from 1961 has an organic frame and striking color fields, inspired by Goethe’s color theory and its warm and cool spectrum.
Finn Juhl’s bedroom interior from 1961 was both an expression of love and a bold departure from the design ideals of its time. When it was launched, it marked a turning point in Finn Juhl’s career. The furniture series was his final contribution to the Cabinetmakers’ Guild Exhibition, which closed just five years later – bringing an end to a remarkable era in which Finn Juhl had been one of its most influential figures.
With its striking use of color and new combinations of materials, the bedroom interior marked a new aesthetic direction for Finn Juhl, who moved away from the expression that had defined his breakthrough in the 1940s. He created an extravagant and graphic universe in which the furniture formed a unified whole, reflecting both his desire to explore new creative possibilities and his relationship with Hanne Wilhelm Hansen.
With this relaunch, the story of Finn Juhl’s most personal exhibition comes full circle. Following the return of the Glove Cabinet, House of Finn Juhl is now bringing the complete interior into production: the distinctive Television Chair, the accompanying Television Table, and the sculptural Wilhelm Hansen Bed.
Mixed Reactions
The reception of the exhibition in 1961 was divided. Critics struggled to categorize the furniture, and reactions ranged from fascination to rejection. One reviewer described the bedroom as a festive symphony of colors and noted that Finn Juhl “went his own way”, while an architect who had previously expressed enthusiasm for Finn Juhl described the furniture series as “perfumed”.
The Television Chair is characterized by its cylindrical backrest and distinctive combination of wood and steel, setting it apart from Danish furniture design at the time. Finn Juhl’s original watercolor drawing, which also bears the name Television Chair, depicts a lounge chair in a bold color palette with red upholstery, originally conceived in Thai silk.
In addition to receiving numerous reviews, the chair inspired a comic strip in a Danish newspaper, in which the backrest was caricatured as a tombola. The small Television Table accompanying the chair continues the simple, graphic aesthetic. Its angled edges, also found on the Cocktail Table, open elegantly toward the sides, while its notably low height clearly references Japanese aesthetics. Like the Glove Cabinet, the Television Chair and Television Table are crafted from cherry wood with burnished steel frames and casters in untreated brass.
Recurring Color Palette
The Wilhelm Hansen Bed is the central piece of furniture in the bedroom interior. The sculptural construction is made from cherry wood with wengé details, combining organic forms with a light, almost floating appearance. The sides and headboard, along with the drop-shaped detail on the footboard, feature painted areas inspired by Goethe’s theories of color. The same color scheme is reflected in the drawers of the Glove Cabinet.
Seen through a contemporary lens, the 1961 bedroom stands as one of the clearest expressions of Finn Juhl’s uncompromising drive for renewal. Rather than repeating the forms that had made him famous, he chose to explore new materials, colors, and ways of shaping the home. The relaunch brings an overlooked chapter of his work back into the spotlight while giving new life to a deeply personal story of love, creative freedom, and the courage to forge one’s own path.
The pieces can be ordered from all official Finn Juhl retailers starting September 10, 2026.
