Atelier Sandemar is a small Swedish furniture manufactory with its own workshop in the archipelago south of Stockholm. Run by Lilian de Souza and Martin Altwegg, it produces handcrafted furniture in limited series, and its collection is closely tied to the designer David Ericsson.
Background
De Souza and Altwegg met while working at Studio Hannes Wettstein in Zurich and moved to Sweden in 2009. Before launching their own brand they built custom furniture for private clients and made small production series for companies such as Svenskt Tenn and Källemo. That experience of precise, small-scale manufacturing became the basis for Atelier Sandemar.
Design philosophy
The company focuses on high-quality woodwork and natural materials such as solid birch and oak, linen and linoleum, combined with steel where strength is needed. Pieces are made in the company’s own workshop, with close attention to detail, and the aim is furniture that is clear and practical for everyday life.
Key collaborations
Almost the entire collection is designed by David Ericsson. It began with the Oona deckchair, which was named Furniture of the Year, and the matching Oona side table. The Pepp family of 2023 pairs powder-coated steel with handwoven linen, while the Sand chair, shown at the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2024, draws on ladderback chairs and the Shaker tradition.
Recent work
At the Stockholm Furniture Fair 2025 the company presented the Moon glass cabinet, limited to 30 pieces, together with the Noom sideboard and the Enno desk with its linoleum top and linen webbing.
