Rooted in Hälsingland craftsmanship and looking ahead, Edsbyn develops furniture and environments that evolve over time — often with a focus on the workplace. Since 1899, the company has combined material sensitivity with forward thinking, from the spindle chairs of the Swedish home to flexible furniture systems for world-class offices and projects.

From skis to spindle chairs

Edsbyn began producing Windsor-style chairs as early as 1936, using leftover wood from its ski manufacturing — a resourceful start that would define the company’s approach to material for decades. The chair that grew out of it, Fanett, was born in 1949 when factory foreman Lennart Karlstorp designed a chair built to minimize both weight and production cost. A few years later, the Finnish designer Ilmari Tapiovaara refined Karlstorp’s design and gave it the model name 55T. By the time production of Fanett ceased in 1970, more than five million chairs had been sold — and in 2025 Edsbyn reintroduced the chair, replacing its original imported beech backrest with birch sourced from Hälsingland.

A workplace furniture maker today

That same material sensitivity now shapes Edsbyn’s furniture for offices and public spaces. Jens Fager has designed several pieces for the company, including the Arc chair and the Everlong seating system, while Claesson Koivisto Rune designed the Eline task chair, later adapted with wheels for greater mobility.

Edsbyn marked its 125th anniversary in 2024 under the description “125 years of looking ahead” — a company still working from a 500-metre-long factory in Hälsingland, guided by the same principles of simplicity, quality and authenticity that shaped its earliest chairs.
