Furniture of the Year 2006 – Tilt Chair by Peter Andersson

A Chair for Disobedience

A chair to rock on, a piece of furniture that encourages disobedient behavior is Furniture of the Year 2006. The designer Peter Andersson receives Sköna hem’s award and a stipendium of 20,000 kronor for his thoughtful design.

The prize, a stipendium of 20,000 kr, will be awarded at a ceremony at Konserthuset in Stockholm on February 9, 2005. “I naturally rocked on chairs myself in school,” says Peter Andersson. “But why is it forbidden? Why is it taboo to do something that everyone does? That question is interesting in itself, I think.” Peter Andersson is educated at Konstfack and Denmark’s design school, and commenting design has been his passion ever since school time in the 1990s. With the chair Tilt, he wanted to challenge concepts and ask precisely why? Two pairs of legs on rockers gave the furniture both strength and its aesthetic distinguishing feature. NC Möbler in Valdemarsvik produces it.

Jury’s motivation: “A chair that with simple means surprises and questions habitual behaviors. A sympathetic solution to an old problem – instead of learning not to rock on the chair, we are offered to pleasantly rock back and forth on the back legs. A piece of furniture from Design Year 2005 with potential for a long life.”
