The design

Vaarnii introduces the 1006 Hans Pendant 14, the smallest pendant in its Hans lighting family, based on designs by Swedish lighting designer Hans-Agne Jakobsson. Although compact in scale, it carries the same bold character and emits the same pine-filtered light as its larger siblings, among them the Hans Pendant XL.

The 1006 is intended to be used singly, bringing graphic interest and a warm light to small spaces, or in multiples for maximum pine impact across larger rooms.

Materials and construction

Vaarnii has re-engineered Jakobsson’s original 1960s designs for efficiency and performance, using sections of solid Finnish pine to support circular strips of high-quality pine veneer. The work reintroduces the designs to the market after decades of absence — a reissue that began in 2023, when the Hans lights returned, handmade in Finland. The same pairing of solid pine and fine veneer also defines John Tree’s Hoop Table Lamp for the brand.

About Hans-Agne Jakobsson

Hans-Agne Jakobsson was a prolific Swedish lighting designer who produced hundreds of lamps and pendants over a long career. He worked for a number of Scandinavian brands before establishing his own manufacturing company in Sweden to produce and distribute his work through the 1960s and beyond. He worked in a range of materials, but it was his pine veneer designs that became modern classics, and they remain among the most distinctive lighting designs of the last century.
