Arch Sofa by Mattias Stenberg for Materia

Swedish designer Mattias Stenberg has created the Arch sofa for Materia — a freestanding piece where every side functions as a front.

The organic silhouette and elevated backrest give the sofa a sculptural presence that works equally well placed centrally in a room or positioned in a corner.

The design encourages interaction. Because the sides extend seamlessly from the backrest in a continuous sweep, comfortable seating is available regardless of direction — making it natural for two people to sit facing each other.

The raised back also creates a sense of visual space, preventing the piece from feeling heavy even against a wall.

Arch is conceived for flexibility. It can be placed solo, arranged in pairs facing each other, back-to-back, or grouped in threes with plants or lighting between them. The sofa is suited for professional environments including hotel lobbies, receptions, universities and offices.

Mattias Stenberg founded his Stockholm-based studio in 2010, working across residential architecture, furniture and lighting design. His approach combines backgrounds in engineering and business development with a conviction that good design should be immediately understood. Recipients of recognition include the German Design Award, Good Design Award and Nordic Designer of the Year.
