Anna Kraitz’s newest lighting pair for Örsjö, A-Cuff and Q-Cuff, takes its structure from tailoring — the clean lines of a men’s shirt set against the soft gathers of a puff sleeve — with a hook built into each stand so the lamps can hold a jacket or scarf as part of the room’s daily rituals.
From Budapest to Beckmans
Born in 1973, Kraitz studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Budapest from 1993 to 1995, at Pernby’s School of Painting in Stockholm, and completed her design education at Beckmans College of Design in 1999, the year she founded her own studio in Stockholm.
Sofa Anna and a philosophy of small observations
Her graduation project, a study of how people actually sit, became Sofa Anna for Källemo — the piece that opened her long relationship with the manufacturer. Kraitz has described her wider practice as one where “the simple, small and everyday matters the most,” producing objects across furniture, lighting and textiles that she likens to a sibling group: distinct, but visibly related.
An ironing board, and a table built for cafés
For Design House Stockholm, Kraitz turned a household ironing board into the Cinderella Table, named Sköna Hem’s Furniture of the Year in 2023, and followed it with the Tock Table, a round oak dining table with a knurled aluminium base inspired by vintage Parisian café furniture and the mechanical world of Chaplin’s Modern Times.
Recognition
Kraitz received the Ljungrenska Design Prize in 2002 and the Bruno Mathsson Prize in 2008, alongside work for Källemo, Nola, Örsjö and Svenskt Tenn, and exhibitions including Nationalmuseum and Malmö’s Form/Design Center. More of her work is on view at annakraitz.com.
