We congratulate Mats Theselius on the nomination to the German Design Award 2018 for Tavolo
Tavolo is a table from the series Körsbärstjuven (The Cherry Thief), originally launched in 2001.
The piece belongs to a numbered edition of 16 tables, each produced to exacting standards in solid Swedish steel with a black bronzed finish.
The manufacturing process reflects Theselius’s characteristic material rigour: turning, milling, chipping, forging, threading and polishing are all employed in the production of the base. The tabletop is in polished black Solid Surface, 70 cm in diameter and 24 mm thick. Overall table height is 73 cm.
The nomination acknowledges both the quality of the object and the precision of its manufacture — values that have defined Theselius’s practice across four decades. Born in Stockholm in 1956, Mats Theselius studied interior architecture at Konstfack (University of Arts, Crafts and Design), graduating in 1984. He subsequently worked in architecture before establishing his design practice, which operates across furniture, lighting, objects, installations and set design. His work is consistently produced in limited editions, combining industrial materials and craft processes with a formal language that moves between the functional and the sculptical.
Theselius’s works are represented in the permanent collections of Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg, the Danish Museum of Art and Design in Copenhagen, and the National Museum in Oslo.
Tavolo is produced by Move Möbler AB, Malmö, Sweden.
