New edition revisits the midcentury designer’s archive to bring an original vision to life
One of the most distinctive design concepts to emerge from the career of Swedish-born designer and architect Greta M. Grossman, the Gräshoppa Collection has long been beloved for its innovative blend of classic modernism and organic playfulness.
GUBI’s new iteration of the Gräshoppa Table Lamp introduces a canvas shade to the design, staying true to Grossman’s pioneering spirit while adding fresh style and character.

A historic vision recreated
Drawing from an image of a prototype developed between 1939 and 1941, GUBI’s design team has brought the concept to life with meticulous attention to detail. At the heart of this new edition is a handmade natural canvas lampshade with an elongated form compared to the slightly rounded conical steel shade of the existing edition.
The carefully crafted shape extends the reach of the lamp’s light across the surface beneath it, while maintaining a sense of visual balance in the lamp’s silhouette. Ensuring the canvas is perfectly angled and curved when fixing the fabric to the frame, requires expert skill and craftsmanship on the part of the artisan, yet the shade is also easily removable, facilitating replacement.
One of the family
The new edition retains the distinctive angled stem and round brass base that give the Gräshoppa Table Lamp its characteristic personality, ensuring it sits comfortably beside its steel-shaded sibling, while offering a new material expression. The lampshade is hand-made from natural canvas, which effectively diffuses the light, creating a softer ambient radiance that brings a sense of warmth to the space. A new polished-brass finish to the stem and base gently amplifies the glow, adding shine to the surface and lending a richer, more refined expression to the design.
Elegantly adjustable
Designed for adaptability, the lamp features a ball-socket mechanism that allows for easy adjustment of the shade’s angle, enabling users to direct the light precisely where it is desired. The form and proportions of the lampshade ensure that the light source remains concealed, however the shade is angled. Thanks to the gentle diffusion of light through the material, coupled with its adjustability, the canvas version of Gräshoppa Table Lamp makes an ideal reading light, creating an atmosphere of calmness and conjuring a mood of relaxation.
Possessing a character all of its own, yet slipping seamlessly into the Gräshoppa lighting family, the Gräshoppa Table Lamp with canvas shade is a timeless tribute to the design genius of Greta M. Grossman – the realization of a historic prototype, adapted for the 21st century.
