Japanese Hinoki Joinery Stool by POJ Studio and Norm Architects
Copenhagen-based Norm Architects has collaborated with Japanese design studio POJ Studio on the Joinery Stool, a minimalist seat crafted from locally sourced Japanese hinoki wood.
The stool showcases traditional no-nails joinery techniques, with precisely interlocking joints providing structural integrity without metal fasteners.

Master carpenters Fujikawa Takuma in Nara and Yoshida Woodworking in Keihoku, Kyoto, handcraft each piece using sustainably harvested hinoki. The collaboration reflects shared values between Scandinavian and Japanese design traditions, emphasizing material quality, craftsmanship, and sustainable forestry practices. The stool retains the wood’s natural grain patterns and growth rings as visible design elements.
