A shelving system sculpting space through light, form, and movement

In collaboration with BD Barcelona Design, Snøhetta has designed and developed Sequence, a new shelving system unlike conventional storage. More than a product, Sequence is a sculptural design that transforms the spaces it inhabits, through a play on composition, contrast and architectural clarity.

The name Sequence reflects the collection’s conceptual foundation: a spatial narrative defined by variation, progression, and rhythm. With each module offering a unique scale and proportion, Sequence creates structures that evolve with time, use, and interaction—inviting fluidity into the built environment.

“Design shapes the experiences we inhabit. Sequence is a shelving system conceived not simply as storage, but as a spatial instrument, designed to build environments through composition, contrast, and continuity. Each element in the Sequence family offers a precise balance between openness and structure. The variation in scale and proportion allows the shelves to function as dividers, displays, or expressive structures—inviting new ways of defining space. As they interact with light and shadow, their presence shifts; static form becomes dynamic expression,” says Marius Myking, Director of Snøhetta Product Design.

Sculpting space through light, form, and movement

Rather than functioning as conventional storage, Sequence acts as a spatial instrument—composing, dividing, and expressing environments through contrast and continuity. The interaction of its surfaces with light and shadow creates a sense of motion: what begins as static becomes dynamic.

At its core is an ultra-thin 6 mm Fenix® surface—refined, durable, and matte—pushing the limits of material as structure. Custom-designed aluminium connectors, crafted from Hydro recycled aluminium, combine precision engineering with sustainable values.

The result is a flat-pack modular system that is easy to assemble, tactile in use, and architecturally grounded.

“We wanted to explore the potential of Fenix beyond its conventional use. Our aim with Sequence was to translate a material traditionally used only for surfaces into a purely structural element. The result is a system that challenges expectations through simplicity, material efficiency and a design optimised for flat-pack and easy assembly. Together with BD, we merged design and engineering to rethink conventional shelving,” says Angel Valiente, Senior Designer at Snøhetta Product Design.

Built to endure

Crafted with an ultra-thin 6 mm Fenix® profile and joined by precision-engineered, recycled aluminium, Sequence is built to endure. Its refined strength and modular flexibility allow it to move with you—shifting through the evolving sequences of life, always ready to adapt and hold your books, your objects and your stories.

“The development of the Sequence collection has been a meaningful journey for BD — a true laboratory of innovative materials and technical solutions, with industrialization and sustainability at its core. In close collaboration with Snøhetta, we have helped shape a highly flexible system that thoughtfully explores modularity, emotion, and function to create a distinctive spatial presence. This versatile design is perfectly suited to both workspaces and domestic environments says,” Otto Canalda, Design Director at BD Barcelona

The collection

Sequence includes a family of eight shelving units, available in both freestanding and wall-mounted versions. Launching exclusively at 3 Days of Design in five colors—the collection offers designers flexibility in both palette and spatial expression.

From intimate interiors to open architectural contexts, Sequence invites a rethinking of shelving as a living, evolving part of the spatial experience—fluid, rhythmic, and deeply intentional.
