Taverna is a stackable peg chair designed by Sami Kallio for Karl Andersson & Söner.
The design takes its reference from classic peg and restaurant chairs of the early twentieth century — a chair typology with a long history in public dining environments across Scandinavia and beyond.
The construction is solid wood throughout, with finger-jointed connections between the back and legs.
This joinery technique provides structural strength while expressing a care for detail and an economy of material that Kallio consistently pursues in his work. The result is a chair that is robust enough for high-use contract environments while remaining refined in its proportions and honest in its materials.
Taverna is stackable, which makes it practical for restaurants, cafés and other hospitality settings where space is managed across different times of day. The stackability does not compromise the chair’s presence — it reads as a whole piece, not as a typological shortcut.
Sami Kallio was born in Finland and raised in Sweden. His practice spans furniture, objects and lighting for manufacturers in Scandinavia and internationally. He works across both residential and contract design, with a consistent approach rooted in traditional woodworking craft and careful attention to proportion. Karl Andersson & Söner is a Swedish manufacturer based in Huskvarna, with a long tradition of producing solid wood furniture for public and residential settings.
