Hans J. Wegner’s CH88 Chair Celebrates 70 Years – Carl Hansen & Søn

Hans J. Wegner’s Ch88 Chair Celebrates 70 Years – Carl Hansen & Søn | ScandinavianDesign.com

Hans J. Wegner developed the CH88 chair in 1955 as a prototype for the H55 exhibition in Helsingborg, Sweden.

Nearly six decades later, in 2014, Carl Hansen & Søn finally put this distinctive dining chair into production.

The CH88 showcases Wegner’s mastery in combining contrasting materials. Wood, steel, and upholstery unite in a harmonious composition that balances visual elegance with structural strength.

Following Wegner’s design philosophy, the chair features meticulously calculated proportions between seat and backrest for optimal lumbar support.

When introducing the CH88, Carl Hansen & Søn made thoughtful updates for contemporary needs. The manufacturer increased the seat, armrest, and backrest heights, and added stackability – a crucial feature for modern spaces.

Today, the CH88 ranks among Carl Hansen & Søn’s most popular dining chairs. Its minimalist silhouette has made it a natural choice for homes, restaurants, hotels, and offices globally. The design’s versatility extends to its aesthetic flexibility, available in configurations ranging from classic to monochrome, natural to vibrant.

“The CH88 is an incredibly versatile dining chair. With its combination of wood, steel, and upholstery, it can be configured in countless variants and styles. The chair has a modern look while addressing space-saving needs, with significant demand for stackable chairs that can be pushed under tables,” says Knud Erik Hansen, CEO and third-generation owner of Carl Hansen & Søn.

As the CH88 celebrates its 70th anniversary, it exemplifies Wegner’s enduring design legacy and Carl Hansen & Søn’s dedication to iconic Scandinavian furniture.
