“A chair is the object that is closest to the human”

On 26 September 1960, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon faced each other in the first televised presidential debate in American history.

Both men sat in a chair designed eleven years earlier by a cobbler’s son from Tønder. It had been called the Round Chair until an American magazine put it on a cover and named it simply the Chair, and the name stuck.

Hans J. Wegner designed more than five hundred chairs across a working life of sixty years — over a thousand furniture models in total, of which around a hundred and thirty were still in production on his ninetieth birthday. No other designer in Denmark comes close to that output, and almost none of it looks like filler.

Tønder and the workshop

Wegner was born on 2 April 1914 in Tønder, in South Jutland near the German border, the son of the shoemaker Peter Mathiesen Wegner. He was apprenticed to the master cabinetmaker H. F. Stahlberg at fourteen, carved wooden figures in his spare time and meant to become a wood carver, made his first chair at fifteen, and qualified as a journeyman in March 1932.

That sequence matters more than any later schooling. Wegner learned the trade from the material end before he learned it from the drawing end, and he never lost the habit of asking whether a thing could actually be built. During military service in Copenhagen he saw the Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibition and concluded he was not yet good enough to open a workshop of his own — which is how he ended up at the School of Arts and Crafts in 1936, and how he came to sit next to a fellow Jutlander named Børge Mogensen.

Aarhus City Hall

In 1938 the architects Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller opened an office in Aarhus to build the new town hall. On the recommendation of his teacher Orla Mølgaard-Nielsen, Wegner was hired to draw the furniture and took a year’s leave from his studies. His first job was not the town hall at all but the furniture for Nyborg public library, and he was sent to Nyborg to supervise the building work before being called back.

The town hall furniture was finished between 1939 and 1942. In parallel he began working with the woodcutter Michael Laursen in Aarhus and with Johannes Hansen’s cabinetmaking workshop in Copenhagen — the two relationships that would define the next thirty years. A rocking chair for Laursen in 1940 was the first Wegner model to go into series production. He set up his own drawing office in Aarhus in 1941.

Johannes Hansen and the Guild years

Wegner exhibited at the Copenhagen Cabinetmakers’ Guild in 1938 and then every year from 1941 until the exhibitions ended in 1966 — twenty-six consecutive appearances, twenty-four prizes, and roughly half of everything he showed there going into production. No other designer used that platform as thoroughly.

After moving to Copenhagen in 1946 he was given the run of Johannes Hansen’s workshop: permission to make whatever he liked, and a close working friendship with the foreman Niels Thomsen. The Peacock Chair of 1947 was the first result — a Windsor chair rebuilt, its spindles flattened where the shoulders meet them so the back works as a back rather than as decoration.

The Round Chair followed in 1949, its armrest and top rail cut from three pieces of wood and joined with a visible W-shaped finger joint at the back, because Wegner refused to hide the point where a chair does its structural work. In February 1950 the American magazine Interiors ran an article on furniture by Wegner, Mogensen and Finn Juhl; American orders for the Round Chair began arriving shortly afterwards, and in 1950 it was voted best design at the Good Design exhibition in the United States by both the public and the jury.

The Wishbone

Wegner began working with Carl Hansen & Søn in 1948 on light chairs, and drew the CH24 in 1949. It has not left production since, which makes it one of the longest continuously manufactured chairs in the world.

Its steam-bent top rail and the Y-shaped back splat that gives it its English name are the visible part. The rest is labour: more than a hundred separate operations per chair, and a seat woven by hand from roughly a hundred and twenty metres of paper cord, still done by people rather than machines. The Wishbone turned Carl Hansen & Søn from a regional workshop into an international company.

One designer, many workshops

Wegner never tied himself to a single manufacturer. In 1950 alone he took on four more, each with its own specialism: Andreas Tuck for tables, Getama for furniture with loose cushions, Ry Møbler for cabinets, A. P. Stolen for upholstery — while continuing with Carl Hansen and Johannes Hansen at the same time.

Fritz Hansen had asked him in 1943 for proposals for their bent-wood production, which produced the Chinese Chairs; he kept drawing for them into the mid-fifties. The Flag Halyard Chair of 1950 was designed with no manufacturer in mind and went to Getama, before PP Møbler took it over in 2002. The Ox Chair arrived in 1960 through A. P. Stolen and passed to Erik Jørgensen in 1984. Peter’s Chair and the J16 rocking chair, both drawn in 1944 for FDB — where Mogensen ran the design department — are made today by Carl Hansen and Fredericia respectively.

The work is recognisable across all of them without ever repeating itself. What holds it together is not a style but a method: find what the material will do, then find the shape that does not fight it.

PP Møbler

PP Møbler came in through the back door. From 1953 the workshop built wooden frames for A. P. Stolen’s Wegner furniture as a subcontractor. When Wegner loosened his ties with Johannes Hansen in 1968 he was welcomed there, and in 1969 drew the pp201 and pp203 as the first pieces made for PP directly. In the mid-seventies PP took over much of the table collection from Andreas Tuck. When Johannes Hansen closed in 1990, PP Møbler took over the production of a large part of the catalogue — the Round Chair, the Peacock, the Chinese Chair — and Fredericia took a further group of models the following year.

Recognition

Wegner and the Finnish designer Tapio Wirkkala were the first recipients of the Lunning Prize in 1951. He took the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale in 1950 and medals there in 1953 and 1957, the Eckersberg Medal in 1955, the Prince Eugen Medal in 1960, appointment as Royal Designer for Industry in London in 1958, the C. F. Hansen Medal in 1981, an honorary doctorate from the Royal College of Art in 1995 and the 8th International Design Award in Osaka the same year.

He stopped drawing in 1992, handing responsibility for the furniture to his daughter Marianne, who had worked in his studio since 1973. He died on 26 January 2007, aged 92.

Tønder again

Tønder’s water tower was converted into a Wegner museum in 1993, holding thirty-six chairs donated by Hans and Inga Wegner. In 2026 Museum Wegner opened in the same town — a building by Cobe raised on stilts above the marshland where he was born.

Hans Jørgensen Wegner is born in Tønder on 2 April.

1928–32
Apprenticed to the master craftsman Stahlberg in Tønder. In his spare time he carves wooden figures and means to become a wood carver. At fifteen he makes his first chair. In March 1932 he qualifies as a journeyman and plans a workshop of his own.

1932–35
Military service in Copenhagen. Sees the Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibition and concludes he needs more training before setting up on his own.

1935
Takes a two-and-a-half-month cabinetmaking course at the Technological Institute and applies to the School of Arts and Crafts.

1936
Enters the School of Arts and Crafts, specialising in cabinetmaking. Meets and befriends a fellow Jutlander, Børge Mogensen.

1938
Debut at the Cabinetmakers’ Guild exhibition with a dining table, chairs and armchairs drawn for the master craftsman Ove Lander.

1938
Arne Jacobsen and Erik Møller open an office in Aarhus for the new town hall. On the recommendation of his teacher O. Mølgaard-Nielsen, Wegner is hired to draw the furniture and is granted a year’s leave from his studies. His first assignment is the furniture for Nyborg public library for Erik Møller and Flemming Lassen; for a period he is sent to Nyborg to supervise the building work.

1939
Dining room furniture for the Guild exhibition for the master craftsman P. Nielsen. Before the Nyborg assignment is finished he is called to Aarhus for the town hall.

1939–42
The Aarhus town hall furniture is completed, produced by I. C. A. Nielsen and Planmøbel. Alongside the drawing office work, Wegner begins working with the master woodcutter Michael Laursen in Aarhus and with Johannes Hansen’s cabinetmaking workshop in Copenhagen.

1940

1941
An unbroken run of twenty-six consecutive appearances at the Guild exhibitions begins. Wegner signs with Planmøbel for three series of office furniture, which end up at Aarhus town hall in slightly different versions. He sets up a drawing office as an independent designer in Aarhus.

1943
Fritz Hansen asks Wegner for proposals for their bent-wood production. The result is the Chinese Chairs, of which two go into production (FH 4283 and FH 1783, later pp66 at PP Møbler). He continues drawing for Fritz Hansen into the mid-fifties. Børge Mogensen puts him in contact with FDB. Wegner is admitted to the Academic Architects’ Association (MAA) and to Kunstnersamfundet.

1944
Designs Peter’s Chair and Table and the J16 rocking chair, both produced by Tarm Stole- og Møbelfabrik, owned by FDB. Peter’s Chair and Table is made today by Carl Hansen, the rocking chair by Fredericia. Draws and completes the intarsia work on the Fish Cabinet (JH).

1945–46
Wegner and Børge Mogensen work together on designs for the Guild exhibitions.

1946
Moves to Copenhagen, closer to Johannes Hansen’s workshop. With Mogensen he wins first prize in Magasin du Nord’s competition for practical, up-to-date hotel furniture.

1946–51
Teaches at the School of Arts and Crafts and works in Professor Palle Suenson’s drawing office.

1946–48

1946–
The collaboration with Johannes Hansen tightens. Hansen lets Wegner make whatever furniture he likes at the workshop, and Wegner becomes close friends with the foreman Niels Thomsen, who starts there in 1947. The Peacock Chair of 1947 is the first of many one-off pieces.

1948
Shell chairs in moulded plywood for MoMA’s low-cost furniture competition. Chair, table and sofa in moulded shells for Fritz Hansen. National breakthrough with his furniture at the Guild exhibition. Begins working with Carl Hansen & Søn on light chairs.

1949
The Round Chair with a woven seat, the folding chair and the three-shell chair (all JH). The Y-Chair, CH24. Exhibition architect for Foreningen af Dansk Kunsthåndværk.

1949–52
Furniture by Finn Juhl, Børge Mogensen and Wegner is selected by the American magazine Interiors, which publishes an article in February 1950 featuring the Round Chair, the Peacock Chair and the three-shell chair. American customers begin asking for the Round Chair in particular.

1950
Begins working with four further producers, each with its own specialism: Andreas Tuck (tables), Getama (furniture with loose cushions), Ry Møbler (cabinets and closets) and A. P. Stolen (upholstery), while continuing to design for Carl Hansen. Designs CH22, CH23 and CH25 and the upholstered version of the Round Chair (JH). The Flag Halyard Chair is designed with no particular producer in mind and goes to Getama; PP Møbler takes over its production in 2002. Awarded the Grand Prix at the Milan Triennale. The Round Chair (pp503) is chosen by both the public and a professional jury as best design at the Good Design exhibition in the United States.

1951

The Cow Horn Chair (JH) and the Sawhorse Chair (CH29). Work begins with C. M. Madsen’s factories to meet increasing demand for light Wegner chairs. Becomes supervisor of teaching at the School of Arts and Crafts. Takes a three-month study trip to the United States and Mexico with his wife; he is offered production of his furniture by a high-technology company and declines.

1953
W1 and W2 (CMM). The Valet Chair (JH). Receives an honorary diploma and gold medal at the Milan Triennale.

1955
Draws the office swivel chair (JH), influenced by Professor Eigil Snorrason’s campaign to make designers attend to ergonomics — visible in the chair’s low back support. Receives the Eckersberg Medal and Dansk Købestævne’s annual medal.

1956
Draws his first bed settee (GE), prompted by the growth in student housing.

1957
Silver medal at the Milan Triennale.

1958
Lamps and conference tables (JH) for UNESCO in Paris. Receives Dansk Snedkerlaug’s annual award. Appointed Royal Designer for Industry in London and receives the Citation of Merit at the Pratt Institute in New York.

1959
Draws his own holiday home at Hald Strand in North Zealand. The GE290 series of armchairs and sofas.

1960
The Ox Chair (AP). Receives the International Design Award from the American Institute of Decorators for furniture design, and the Swedish Prince Eugen Medal.

1961

The Guild exhibitions end. Wegner has entered every year since 1938 except 1940 and has won twenty-four prizes in the associated competitions; approximately half the furniture shown there went into production. Receives the International Design Award from the American Institute of Interior Designers, New York. Becomes a member of IDD, Danish Designers.

1967
A rocking chair that can be assembled and taken apart at will (GE). After several years of experiments with laminated wood he presents the Hammock Chair (GE). Receives the Citation of Merit from the American Institute of Interior Designers.

1968
Furniture for several student halls of residence (GE), among them Kampsax and Ostenfeld. Wegner loosens his ties with Johannes Hansen and is welcomed at PP Møbler, which has produced wooden frames for A. P. Stolen’s Wegner furniture since 1953. He begins drawing for PP Møbler; in the mid-seventies PP takes over a large part of the table collection from Andreas Tuck.

1969
The first furniture drawn for PP: pp201 and pp203. Draws furniture for retirement homes. His house wins an award from Gentofte municipality.

Tables for KPMG in Copenhagen (PP). Fredericia Furniture takes over a number of Wegner models from Johannes Hansen; Fredericia and Wegner had worked together once before, in the mid-seventies, and on both occasions the collaboration lasts a couple of years.

1992
Draws the Rødding Chair (pp93/193) for the 150th anniversary of Rødding folk high school. Wegner stops drawing but continues to advise his daughter, who has gradually taken over responsibility for the furniture.

1993
