Glass Enters the Pira System – Single and Double-Sided Sliding Doors for Wall and Room Divider Use
In 2026, glass enters the Pira story. Designers Anna von Schewen and Björn Dahlström have expanded Olle Pira’s reimagined 1954 shelving system with new display cabinets, introducing transparency and lightness to a design already celebrated for its structural precision and material honesty.
The new Pira glass cabinets are available with single- or double-sided sliding doors, making the system adaptable to different spatial conditions – placed flat against a wall or positioned as a freestanding room divider.
Two glass options are offered: clear glass for unobstructed display, and fluted glass, which adds a subtle tactile quality while keeping the contents fully visible.

The original Pira shelf was designed in 1954 by Olle Pira (1927–2018), a master cabinet-maker and Konstfack graduate who became the first Swede to win a gold medal at the Milan Triennale in 1952. When von Schewen and Dahlström reinvented the system for the 2020s, they retained Pira’s structural logic – sheet-steel construction with machined tolerances to 0.02mm, each shelf carrying up to 50 kg – while updating the expression with walnut and white oak bookends. The glass cabinets now extend that language further.
The result is a shelving system capable of adapting across rooms and functions: a technical object that stores and displays with equal seriousness.
