At Salone del Mobile in Milan this April, Johanson presented two new pieces by Färg & Blanche: Split and Lyon, a bar stool and bench built from intersecting arches of split metal tube, and a chair whose armrests grow out of a single continuous line from the rear legs — “a search for lines that feel natural, elegant and alive,” as the studio describes it.
A cabinetmaker and an artist’s daughter
Fredrik Färg trained as a cabinetmaker before design, carrying a long-standing interest in the fashion of Hussein Chalayan and Alexander McQueen; Emma Marga Blanche, born in France, grew up surrounded by art. Together they founded Färg & Blanche in Stockholm in 2010, working out of a former underground garage in Södermalm that doubles as showroom and workshop.
Emma, and a leap into production
Their breakthrough piece, the Emma armchair for Gärsnäs, launched in 2013 as a hand-sewn, tailored design where the needlework serves as both decoration and structure. The same year introduced the F-A-B chair series for Driade, described by the studio as “a body to be dressed” in interchangeable textile covers.
Into the courtyard
This spring, the studio’s Island furniture series for Nola was installed in newly opened courtyards in Sundbyberg, its organic benches and tables set deliberately against the standard rectilinear picnic table.
Exhibitions and collections
The studio’s RE-cover chairs are held in the National Museum’s collection in Stockholm, and in 2012 they staged a joint exhibition with Comme des Garçons in Japan. Alongside Johanson and Driade, they continue to work with Gärsnäs, Rörstrand, Petite Friture and Design House Stockholm. More of their work is on view at fargblanche.com.
