Sumo tables by Fredrik Mattson for Materia

Fredrik Mattson has designed the Sumo table series for Materia

— a range of large-format meeting and collaboration tables built around a wide-legged, planted stance that gives the series its name and its presence.

Sumo is available with round, square, or rectangular tops, covering the range of configurations used in contemporary meeting rooms and collaborative workspaces.

All versions share the same structural logic: legs set wide apart, creating stability and a visual weight that anchors the room. The name reflects this directly — Sumo tables are designed to stand out, establish a centre of gravity in the space, and invite people to gather around them.

Each table in the range can be specified with power sockets integrated directly into the top surface, accessible without additional cable management or adapter plates. This is a practical consideration for meeting rooms where presentations, laptops, and devices are in constant use — power access at the table rather than the wall keeps the working surface functional and the room uncluttered.

Fredrik Mattson is a Swedish designer who has worked extensively in the contract and workplace sector, with furniture for Blå Station and Materia among his most sustained collaborations. Materia, a Swedish contract furniture manufacturer, produces seating and tables oriented toward professional and public environments.

Sumo addresses a specific need in the contract market: a meeting table that reads as a design object rather than generic office furniture, while delivering the power access and format flexibility that modern collaborative work requires.
