Hans J. Wegner’s iconic Ox Chair represents one of the most challenging design and production stories in Danish furniture history.
Originally designed in 1960, this bold, sculptural piece challenged the understated aesthetic of Danish design with its dramatic headrest reminiscent of ox horns.
Initially produced by A.P. Stolen, each Ox Chair was custom made and upholstered in wool. The complex upholstery made it extremely difficult to produce – especially the “horns” which required both precision and muscle strength. Overpriced, the Ox Chair remained in production for only two short years.
The breakthrough came in 1988 when Wegner contacted Erik Jørgensen, renowned for his upholstery expertise. Erik Jørgensen successfully developed an innovative production method, and the chair was relaunched in 1989 at the Milan Furniture Fair where it instantly manifested as a true design classic.
Erik Jørgensen continued producing the Ox Chair until October 2020, when Fredericia Furniture acquired the company, bringing this iconic piece under Fredericia’s prestigious design portfolio. The chair remained Wegner’s personal favorite throughout his life, occupying a place in his own living room.
