Gärsnäs has given Pierre Sindre’s Day chair, originally released in 2012, a new wooden frame — Day Wood adds slim, elegant legs and armrests to the fully upholstered shell, and can be retrofitted onto existing metal-based chairs already in use. “The most important thing is to bring holistic, thoughtful additions,” Sindre says of the update, “because it’s thoughtful and sound.”
Starting from the material
Sindre describes his own design philosophy as one that springs directly from materials — testing what can be achieved by challenging wood, metal, leather or textile before deciding on form. Much of his work is built for public environments, where user-friendliness and durability carry as much weight as appearance, and where deep material knowledge is what makes a piece last for years rather than seasons.
Ono, and a prize for craft
His Ono chair for Källemo, part of a wider Ono, Duo and Quattro series, sits alongside lighting for Örsjö and seating for Eilersen and Bebo Objects. In 2022, Sindre received the Bruno Mathsson Prize, the largest design award in the Nordic region, in recognition of that body of work.
Comfort for healthcare settings
For NC Nordic Care, Sindre designed the Cirrus sofa collection, built to meet hygiene and accessibility requirements — removable upholstery, an optional rubber fabric, raised seating — while keeping the warm, homelike character of residential furniture rather than a clinical one.
Function, care and playfulness
Sindre sums up his own work as “a combination of function, care, and playfulness,” a balance that runs through his lighting for Örsjö as much as his seating. More of his work is on view at pierresindre.se.
