Bruno Mathsson Prize | ScandinavianDesign.com

The Bruno Mathsson Prize is the largest design award in the Nordic region. It has been presented every year since 1984 by Stiftelsen Karin och Bruno Mathssons fond, the foundation that the architect and furniture designer Bruno Mathsson (1907–88) set up towards the end of his life. The prize recognises designers who make a strong contribution to the development of furniture design and related fields, from objects to interior and exterior environments.

Background

Mathsson spent his career working towards what he saw as a better everyday life, combining ergonomics, light and natural materials. The foundation carries that ambition forward by rewarding progress rather than style. The prize sum is 100,000 Swedish kronor, and in recent years the award ceremony has been held at Vandalorum, the museum of art and design in Mathsson’s hometown of Värnamo, often together with an exhibition of the laureate’s work.

Laureates

The list of winners reads like a map of Nordic design since the 1980s. Early laureates include Åke Axelsson (1995), Mats Theselius (1997), Foersom & Hiort-Lorenzen (1998) and Gunilla Allard (2000). The 2000s brought Louise Campbell (2007), Cecilie Manz (2009) and Thomas Bernstrand (2010), followed by Daniel Rybakken (2011), Staffan Holm (2013) and Claesson Koivisto Rune (2015).

More recent winners are TAF (2017), GamFratesi (2018), Folkform (2019), Chris Martin (2020), Monica Förster (2021), Pierre Sindre (2022) and Front (2023). For the 40th anniversary in 2024 the prize went to three designers: Fredrik Paulsen, Jenny Nordberg and Finn Ahlgren. The 2026 prize was awarded to Peter Andersson, recognised for furniture for care and education environments.

Exhibitions

The anniversary was marked by two major shows. Bruno + 35 Mathsson Prize Winners at Sven-Harrys konstmuseum in Stockholm showed Mathsson’s furniture alongside 35 laureates, and The Bruno Mathsson Prize 40 Years at Vandalorum took progress as its theme.

Bruno Mathsson Design Residency

Since 2024 the prize has a sister initiative. The Bruno Mathsson Design Residency, run by Region Jönköping County and Vandalorum, gives an international designer a month in a 1955 Mathsson house in Värnamo, with access to the region’s furniture industry. Recent residents include Maria Bruun (2025) and Maria Jeglinska-Adamczewska (2026).
